Police standoff continues nearly eight hours after Eastvale man barricades himself in vehicle at Long Beach parking lot

A police standoff with an armed man suspected of pumping six shots into the mother of his two children in Riverside County continued this afternoon, more than 8 hours hours after it began in a supermarket parking lot near Long Beach.

Deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s were dispatched about 12:30 a.m. to the City of Eastvale regarding an assault with a deadly weapon call near Rolling Meadow and Burrage streets, said Deputy Armando Munoz of the

Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Munoz said deputies did not find a victim or suspect there, but soon heard that a man had taken a woman with six gunshot wounds, apparently fired with a small-caliber handgun, to a nearby hospital.

The children were not at the location of the reported shooting, in Eastvale, a new city about four miles north of Corona.

It was later determined that the man and woman have two children. Their relationship status and her condition were not immediately known.

Munoz said the suspect left the hospital in a white Dodge, but there was no description of the model type.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies located the suspect, who refused to surrender after a vehicle pursuit ended in a Food 4 Less parking lot in Hawaiian Gardens, a small municipality in southwest L.A. County.

Deputies were dispatched to the intersection of Norwalk Boulevard and Carson Street at 6:59 a.m., according to Deputy Guillermina Saldana of the L.A. County Sheriff’s Headquarters Bureau.

The man remained inside the vehicle, which was surrounded by a team from the sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau, well into the afternoon hours, according to the sheriff’s department.

A perimeter remained in place and Carson Street was closed between Juan Avenue and Norwalk Boulevard. Also, Norwalk Boulevard was closed between 216th Street and 223rd Street, deputies said.

Traffic reporters said the standoff interfered with people trying to attend the City of Hawaiian Garden’s 50th Anniversary Parade.

A man who reportedly shot the mother of his two children at least six times in Eastvale today was armed and holed up inside a vehicle at a strip mall in southeastern L.A. County.

After nearly four hours, Los Angeles County deputies remained surrounding a vehicle in a mini-mall at the intersection of Norwalk Boulevard and Carson Street in Hawaiian Gardens, in southeast L.A. County, according to Deputy Guillermina Saldana of the Sheriff’s Headquarters Bureau.

Deputies from the sheriff’s Lakewood station had confronted the attempted murder suspect barricaded inside a vehicle at a strip mall there at about 7 a.m. today, Saldana said.

A perimeter was then set up, and Carson Street was closed between Juan Avenue and Norwalk Boulevard. Also, Norwalk Boulevard was closed between 216th Street and 223rd Street, deputies said.

The incident began in Eastvale, about four miles north of Corona in western Riverside County, at about 12:30 a.m. today. Deputies got a call of an assault with a deadly weapon call near Rolling Meadow and Burrage streets, said Deputy Armando Munoz of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

The deputy said that the woman was out of surgery and was expected to survive. She had reportedly been shot with a small-caliber handgun.

“It appears to be a domestic violence incident,” Munoz said.

It was later determined that they have two children. Their relationship status and her condition was not immediately known. Munoz said the suspect left the hospital in a white Dodge, but there was no description of the model type.
