Speeding drunken driver rear-ends car; two die

A Riverside man remained jailed, suspected of drunkenly speeding at nearly 100 miles per hour in his luxury car before it rear-ended a sedan and killed two women in an explosion and fire early today.

Julio A. Reyes, 34, of Riverside, suffered minor injuries and was arrested for suspicion of drunken driving causing causing bodily injury, CHP officers said.

Reyes was reportedly driving south on the Corona (15) Freeway, north of the Riverside (91) Freeway, when it hit a Toyota, which exploded. Two women in the Toyota, the driver and her passenger, died as flames engulfed their

vehicle.

The women’s names were not released. The crash was at 1:18 a.m.

Reyes was also booked for suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. He remained in custody today in lieu of $75,000 bail, records showed.

One of Reyes’ two passengers, John P. Lopez, 21, of Fontana, was taken to Riverside Community Hospital for moderate injuries. Reyes’ second passenger, Andrew Saldana, 26, of Moreno Valley, escaped injury, according to the CHP.
