Book drive event to benefit local libraries

Due to budget cuts, many school libraries are in need of books. Gailee Wells of the Temecula Valley Chapter of the Assistance League is leading a book drive to bring much needed reading material to local school libraries.

Four exclusive children’s books authors will be featured and will be supporting the Assistance League Temecula Valley Book Drive event on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will be hosted at the Assistance League’s Chapter House, which will be decorated to intrigue children. Admission to the event is a new or gently used book.

The event will be a day for children to explore new books while learning the lesson of giving. Children are also able to design their own book cover and book mark with the help of one of the featured illustrators. Autographed copies of the four authors’ books will also be on sale.

When asked what her inspiration was for the book drive, Gailee Wells explained that she “want[ed] to create an experience for children.”

“A place they can come with childlike wonder and explore the realm of books. To give children a chance to meet the people who have followed their hearts, creating something meaningful and lasting that can effect change,” said Wells. “This event will also give children the chance to practice giving and to spend time with their family for a unique day of fun. We hope that many will take advantage of this opportunity.”

The featured authors and illustrators will be:

Nancy O’Neill; known for her picture book series titled “Guess What?” In this series she has used illustrations from child artists all over the world, using art contests to select them.

Georgina Olivas; whose books reflect her love of heritage, native language and her children, who inspired her stories.

Catherine S. Snodgrass; who is both author and illustrator of her book “Super Silly Sayings That are Over Your Head.” Her book was a PMA Ben Franklin Literary Award Nominee.

David Yorke; who writes on social issues facing children like bullying, gossiping, and childhood obesity. His books are richly illustrated by Lisa Owen.

The Assistant League’s Chapter House is located at 28720 Via Montezuma, Temecula. For questions about this event or to donate books, call Gailee Wells at (805) 704-7482.
