Chaparral High School drama department wins two awards, six nominations in youth arts competition

TEMECULA – The Chaparral High School Performing Arts Department recently announced that students in its drama department, under the direction of Chris Irvin, video/media arts and drama/music theater teacher, have earned two awards and six additional nominations in the Eighth Annual National Youth Arts Awards for the 2012-2013 season.

Award winners are Avalon Penrose, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Musical (Elle Woods, Legally Blonde); and James Bowen, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Play (Marvin, Enter Laughing).

Receiving nominations were Lead Actor in a Musical, James Bowen as Emmett Forrest in Legally Blonde; Supporting Actress in a Play, Savannah Ghazarian as Emma Kolowitz in Enter Laughing; Featured Actor in a Musical, Kyle Jones as Kyle/Grand Master Chad in Legally Blonde; Featured Actress in a Play, Kali Strawn as Millie in Enter Laughing; Ensemble, Legally Blonde; and Choreography, Allisan Whitman for Legally Blonde.

Created to honor outstanding work by youth in the arts, NYA Awards, formerly known as the National Youth Theatre Awards, has expanded to celebrate music, dance, film, and other art forms. This past school year, more than 300 productions were considered for awards, including shows from more than 100 different theaters in more than 50 cities spanning 10 states. Award winners were selected from nominations by a panel of more than 20 judges and reviewers.

CHS Drama Productions for 2013-14 are Neil Simon’s Fools (Oct. 24 – Nov. 2); Jesus Christ Superstar (Feb. 20 – March 1); and My Sister Eileen (May 8-10).
