Lake Elsinore Valley Education Foundation serves students with scholarship opportunities, books

LAKE ELSINORE – The Lake Elsinore Valley Education Foundation, a local non-profit philanthropic organization, has concluded its ninth year by presenting $1,000 individual scholarship awards to 11 Lake Elsinore Unified District college-bound grads, and distributing free books to young readers in select preschool and elementary schools.

The Lake Elsinore Valley Education Foundation has distributed over $37,000 in scholarships to date. Scholarship awards are based on student applications that include personal student essays, interviews with Foundation Directors, and scoring by an independent panel of judges. This year’s recipients include Katelyn Gordon, Jacob Dodd, Rose Hankins and Davis Peralta of Elsinore HS; Kathryn Lunger, Baldomero Vargas andMauro Villalobos of Lakeside HS; Mercedes Moreno of Ortega High School; Madeline Cowan, Andrew DiNunzio and Nathan Villarreal of Temescal Canyon HS.

Last fall, the foundation distributed over 700 free books to LEUSD second and third grade students in two elementary schools located in Wildomar and Lake Elsinore.

For the past three years, the foundation has made free books available to young readers from pre-school through fifth grade. The foundation obtains a variety of school-approved titles through First Book National Book Bank, costing only shipping and handling for popular surplus and overages available from major book publishers.

The foundation was created in 2005 under the auspices of former LEUSD Superintendent Dr. Sharron Lindsay, who envisioned it as a lasting way to provide financial and instructional support to students of all abilities in the pursuit of a college education. Fundraisers to support scholarship and book donation programs include an annual golf tournament, and bingo, sponsored by the Elks Club, in Wildomar.

The LEVEF Board of Directors is comprised of community representatives from local government, business, utilities, education, and former educators. For more information about getting involved with the Lake Elsinore Valley Education Foundation, contact Kevin Pape at (951) 609-7525, or visit
