LAKE ELSINORE – High school students from western Riverside County interested in applying to one of the nation’s federal military academies will have an opportunity next month to speak directly with representatives from each institution.
Members of Rep. Ken Calvert’s staff will host the 25th annual “Academy Night” May 2 at Ortega High School in Lake Elsinore.
The event is open to youths and their families who reside within the 42nd Congressional District, which encompasses Canyon Lake, Corona, Eastvale, Lake Elsinore, Menifee, Murrieta, Norco, Wildomar and part of Temecula.
According to Calvert’s office, presentations will be made by officials from the U.S. Air Force Academy, Coast Guard Academy, Merchant Marine Academy, Naval Academy and West Point.
The congressman’s staff will be available to discuss the nomination process and what the Republican lawmaker looks for in candidates seeking admission.
“Congressman Calvert’s nominations are made on a strictly competitive basis,” according to a statement from his office. “Candidates are judged on their scholastic achievements, leadership performance, athletic participation, community service and motivation.”
Each member of Congress can nominate 10 prospects to attend an academy, excluding the Coast Guard Academy, which does not require congressional sponsorship. Students must be juniors or seniors before they can apply.
