Medicare celebrates its 50th anniversary this year

Medicare is celebrating a milestone birthday this year. 50 years ago, on July 30, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the landmark amendment to the Social Security Act, which gave life to the Medicare Program and forever changed the landscape of health care in America.

Medicare gives Americans Access to quality, affordable health care that assists those who are entitled to it in leading a healthier and more productive life. Today, about 55 million Americans depend on Medicare to cover health care such as preventive annual physicals and exams, hospital stays, lab tests and durable medical equipment (such as wheelchairs, oxygen and other medical supplies), as well as prescription drugs.

The Medicare Annual Election Period which runs from Oct 15 to Dec 7, is the one time of year when all people with Medicare can see what new benefits Medicare has to offer and make changes, if they want, to their coverage for the upcoming calendar year.
