MURRIETA – A 20-year-old man accused, with a convicted felon, in an attack on a Lake Elsinore woman who was shot while at the wheel of her car was charged Thursday with attempted murder.

Elijah Lamaj Crayton of Lake Elsinore was arrested Monday night following the shooting near the intersection of Grand Avenue and Marie Drive. Along with the attempted murder count, Crayton is charged with a sentence-enhancing gun use allegation.

He’s being held in lieu of $2 million bail at the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta and is slated to make his initial court appearance this afternoon at the adjacent Southwest Justice Center.

Crayton’s co-defendant, 27-year-old Carnell Johnson Jr., also of Lake Elsinore, is charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
He’s free on a $25,000 bond and is slated to be arraigned Dec. 20.  The pair allegedly attacked the victim, whose identity was not released, about 7:30 p.m. Monday while she was on Grand Avenue.

Riverside County sheriff’s Sgt. Brett Seckinger said a deputy heard several shots at the location and spotted a vehicle with its headlights off, prompting the lawman to give chase. The car was found moments later, parked outside a residence in the 33000 block of Leeward Way, bearing bullet holes.

The deputy received a report that a woman had been shot, and the victim was eventually located near the vehicle, suffering from non-life-threatening wounds for which she was treated at Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar, Seckinger said.
He said the ensuing investigation led to Crayton and Johnson, both of whom were arrested in the area without a struggle.

A possible motive for the shooting was not disclosed.

According to court records, Johnson has prior convictions for felony evading, driving under the influence and possession of drugs for sale.
Crayton has no prior documented felony convictions.

Two Lake Elsinore men were arrested Monday, Oct. 23, after a woman was hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds she suffered in Lakeland Village.

Elijah Lamaj Crayton, 20, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and Carnell Johnson, Jr., 27, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Both men were booked into the Cois M. Byrd Detention Center in French Valley, according to a Riverside County sheriff’s news release.

A Riverside County sheriff’s deputy was near Grand Avenue and Marie Drive when he heard two gunshots followed by several shots then saw a vehicle leaving the scene, according to the release.

The deputy tried to catch up to the vehicle, briefly lost sight of it, then spotted it in the 33000 block of Leeward Way. There was evidence it had been involved in a shooting, officials say.
