27-year-old Perris man in custody after Best Buy robbery

MENIFEE – A 27-year-old Perris man was in custody in connection with the robbery of a Best Buy store at knife-point in Menifee, a police sergeant said today.

Officers responded to the Best Buy in the 30000 block of Haun Road at 5:48 p.m. Saturday, minutes after the robbery, Menifee police Sgt. Chris Durham said.

”The unidentified suspect brandished a knife at Best Buy employees and fled the store with stereo equipment. The suspect was last seen entering a black Nissan sedan,” Durham said.

The car was located in Perris and traced to 27-year-old Daniel Israel Martinez, he said.

”Martinez was still armed with the knife and refused to follow instructions from deputies,” Durham said. A canine unit from the Perris Station was deployed and Martinez was taken into custody.

”Martinez was positively identified as the suspect in the robbery. Stolen property was recovered in Martinez’ vehicle and returned to Best Buy employees,” Durham said. ”Martinez was taken to a local hospital for non-life- threatening injuries.”

Sheriff’s department records indicate Martinez was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside on suspicion of second-degree robbery, with bail set at $30,000. He was scheduled to appear in court at the Murrietta Southwest Justice Center on Wednesday, Jan. 8.
