Cheer community mourns death of Tibayan

Danika Rae “Wei-Wei” Tibayan, who was an International All-Girl Level 5 All-Star Cheerleader at Pacific Coast MAGIC (PCM) in Murrieta, passed away November 30 from complications related to an airborne allergic reaction and asthma attack. She was seventeen years old.

Tibayan was a multi-talented Filipina who loved to sing, dance, act, figure skate and cheer. The 4’11” eighty-pound athlete had competed as a “flyer” in the 2011 & 2012 THE WORLDS All-Star Cheerleading Competition at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. She had also competed with her show choir at the “Concert In The Park” in Disneyland (Anaheim) in 2008. She was in numerous dance and drama shows at Diamond Bar High School, in Diamond Bar, CA.

Tibayan can be seen on Youtube performing Beyonce’s “Listen” for her 2010 American Idol audition at Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Florida and also singing Michael Buble’s “I’m Yours” with her brother Nico.

Tibayan had a seizure and was oxygen deprived for approximately thirty minutes.

She had been in a coma for several days, experiencing multiple major seizures and medication regimens at Pomona Valley Hospital; after examinations by three different physicians, including a doctor from Childrens’ Hospital Orange County, she was declared brain dead on November 30.

Facebook and Twitter recorded a chronology of events, her mother’s amazing prayers of faith as well as numerous thoughts and prayers from the cheerleading community around the nation and as far away as England and Germany. Many refer to her as an angel.

The Pacific Coast MAGIC cheer team competed December 2nd at Citizen’s Bank Arena in Ontario and performed a special tribute prayer to her.

Amazingly, just two days after Danika’s passing, her family was in attendance and stood hand in hand with her teammates, athletes and families of PCM and other competitors. The Competition was put on hold for over twenty minutes so the co-owners of PCM, Kellie Elliott and Troy Hedgren, could speak and pray on her behalf.

“I was fortunate to coach Danika for the past two years at Pacific Coast MAGIC,” said PCM Founder and Cheer Coach Kellie Elliott, “She had amazing vocals, an infectious smile, and her petite-framed physique and high-flying stunts were jaw-dropping on stage. Her talents in singing and Cheerleading were envied by those on her team and our younger athletes. She could light a room full of spectators with her confidence in both areas. She was the true meaning of a cheer LEADER to her friends and PCM.”

Tibayan’s parents had generously chosen to donate her organs and seven different recipients are benefitting from the life-giving gifts, including a cheer teammate’s brother, Dylan (19), who received her kidney on December 3. Today, Dylan is recovering well. He is honored and blessed to have such a connection with Danika and her family.

Danika Rae Tibayan is survived by her mother, Nina, her father, Dennis, and older brother Dominic, known as “Nico”.

Donations for the family may be made through the Pacific Coast MAGIC organization, 25815 Jefferson Avenue, Murrieta 92562, (951) 894-7438.

Just read about Danika’s passing in the D. Bar Jan./Feb. issue of "The Windmill." As a mother of a former DBHS student and marching band member, my prayers go out to her family and many, many friends. The Heavens definitely have "A Flying Angel"–one who touched and inspired many while with us and one who continues to inspire through her parent’s generous gift of ongoing life to others. May she now reside with the young who have left us too early….

My friends just posted Danika ‘s story on my son’ so memorial page. I am so very sorry for your loss. They heard about Danika after you sang tonight on the SING-OFF. My son, Giovanni Cipriano just passed away on October 18, 2013 from an allergic reaction to peanuts and had the same complications As Danika. He was in a coma for 3 weeks after loss of oxygen for 12 minutes, many seizures, life support, etc. In my eyes not enough was done to keep his brain alive but is his body was just too week and after 3 weeks just couldn’t sustain itself any longer. It is so painful to hear this happens to anyone else and it is just happening way too much more often. My husband and I have vowed to fight to educate and advocate to get the word out this about the seriousness of this allergy and hope to help our children’s deaths not be in vain, we will scream it out til our voices are heard.
