Intoxicated man flees from police, gets hit by car on Winchester Rd.

A man who had reportedly been drinking in a restaurant parking lot earlier this evening (Friday, Jan. 3), in Temecula, was hit by a car and seriously injured when he ran from authorities into traffic on the busy four-lane street, authorities said.

“The incident was reported about 6 p.m. on Winchester Road just east of Ynez Road,” said Sgt. Dean Spivacke, of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. The westbound lanes were shut down and traffic was diverted around the crash scene through parking lots while deputies investigated.

Spivacke confirmed that a deputy had responded to a report of a man who appeared to be intoxicated and drinking in the parking lot near the Karl Strauss Brewing Company and TGI Fridays. When the deputy pulled up and turned his spotlight on the man, he ran out of the parking lot into traffic on Winchester Road and was then hit by a car in the westbound lanes.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. “The car that hit the unidentified man was traveling within the speed limit and the driver showed no signs of impairment,” Spivacke said.

Lanes were still closed as of 10pm and are expected to be shut down for a few more hours because of the investigation.

It’s too bad they can’t charge the man for being stupid.
