Charges filed against men accused of threatening motorist, trying to take his car

MURRIETA – Felony charges were filed Friday, Dec. 16,  against two men accused of robbing a Lake Elsinore motorist and trying to steal his car.

Anthony Wayne Covert, 19, and Edgar Joel Suarez, 21, both of Lake Elsinore, were arrested Wednesday in the area of Grand Avenue and Marvella Lane.

Both defendants are charged with robbery and attempted carjacking counts, and Covert is additionally charged with making criminal threats of great bodily injury.

The defendants are both being held in lieu of $60,000 bail at the Southwest Detention Center in Murrieta, with arraignment slated for this afternoon at the nearby Southwest Justice Center.

According to Riverside County sheriff’s Sgt. Luke Torres, Covert and Suarez allegedly confronted the victim, who knows the pair, in the 18000 block of Grand and snatched his keys, threatening him and unsuccessfully attempting to drive off in his vehicle.

The defendants fled on foot, and the motorist called 911, Torres said.

Deputies canvassed the area and located Covert and Suarez a short time later, arresting both without incident.

Neither man has prior documented felony or misdemeanor convictions, according to court records.
