Man leads authorities on 30-mile freeway chase

JURUPA VALLEY – A man was arrested yesterday for allegedly stealing an SUV and leading law enforcement officers on a 30-mile chase from Lake Elsinore to Jurupa Valley.

The non-injury pursuit began just after 3 p.m. along Lakeshore Drive, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputy Mike Vasquez told City News Service that the suspect, whose identity was not immediately released, was spotted driving a Toyota 4Runner reported stolen earlier this week.

The deputy signaled the driver to pull over, but “he failed to yield and a pursuit was initiated,” Vasquez said.

He said the suspect fled northbound on Interstate 15, with deputies and California Highway Patrol officers tailing him.

The chase went through Corona, where the driver veered onto the shoulder of the freeway to get around slower moving rush-hour traffic, according to reports from the scene.

At about 3:50 p.m., the Toyota exited the freeway and went onto surface streets in Jurupa Valley, where the suspect stopped and surrendered at the intersection of Limonite and Lucretia avenues, about a mile from the city limits of Ontario.
