MENIFEE – The Audie Murphy Ranch Sports Park grand opening ceremony and party in the park, hosted by the City of Menifee and Brookfield Homes, is set for Sat., May 24 from 10 am to 2 pm. A brief ceremony and ribbon cutting begins at 10 am followed by a fun-filled day of free activities.
The first pitch and inaugural baseball game begins at 10:30 am at the ball fields and features handicapable players and their helpers from the Menifee Valley Little League Challenger Division. On the soccer field, Menifee Youth Soccer is hosting free youth soccer clinics throughout the day. Professional skaters and scooter riders will be showcasing their talents in Menifee’s new skate park at various times during the event.
In addition to the sporting activities, families can enjoy a rock climbing wall, kids’ jumpers, a balloon artist and refreshments. The tot lot and children’s play area, along with the picnic areas, will be open for the first time.
“It’s a big day for the Menifee community,” said City Manager Rob Johnson. “We’ve been anxiously awaiting the opening of this beautiful new sports park, a much-needed amenity for our city’s youth and sports enthusiasts, and another great gathering place for the entire community.”
The park was named for Audie Murphy, America’s most highly decorated World War II veteran. Murphy was also an actor and Hollywood star, and he bred quarter horses on his ranch, what is now the Audie Murphy Ranch Sports Park and housing development.
The new, 11-acre sports park features two basketball courts, a lighted baseball and soccer field, a tot lot and children’s playground, shaded picnic and barbecue areas and a fenced skate park. The park is open from dawn until dusk or when the lights go off, whichever happens last.
The concrete skate park features a pool, rails, ramps, jumps and obstacles for riders of all levels. The skate park is for skateboards and scooters only, no BMX or other bicycles, and helmets are required.
