MENIFEE – Honoring members of the United States military, past and present, the City of Menifee will host a Memorial Day ceremony, followed by a picnic with family games at Wheatfield Park. The Memorial Day ceremony is scheduled for 10 am on Monday, May 30, at the Menifee Veterans Memorial at Wheatfield Park, located at 30627 Menifee Road.
“Menifee is proud to honor the men and women who have served our country and protected our freedoms,” said City Manager Rob Johnson. “The Memorial Day ceremony has become an annual tradition for the City, where community members can come together to recognize the sacrifice of service members and remember the brave heroes we have lost.”
After the Pledge of Allegiance, National Anthem and a medley of military songs, keynote speaker Gerry Thacker, senior vice commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1956, will speak about his service in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
Mayor Pro Tem Greg August, a veteran himself, will lead the community in a wreath laying. The ceremony will conclude with a flyover by the March Air Force Base Warbirds and the retirement of colors.
After the Memorial Day ceremony, attendees are invited to stay for a picnic in the park with holiday-related activities and family games. The first 100 veterans in attendance will receive free refreshments. Food will also be available for purchase during the event.
A special highlight this year, is the opportunity for residents to write why they are thankful for the sacrifice of armed force service members. There will also be a display featuring hometown heroes. If you would like to recognize a hometown hero, please submit a photo for the display by emailing [email protected] Photos can also be dropped off prior to the event to Kristina Hernandez, at the city’s Community Services Department office located at 29995 Evans Road, West Annex building in Menifee.
