A seriously injured hiker was rescued today along a Menifee trail during a coordinated air-ground operation.
The victim, whose identity was not disclosed, went down shortly after 8 a.m. on a path in the area of McCall and Valley boulevards, just north of the Cherry Hills Golf Course, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
An agency spokeswoman said that two engine crews and a truck company, numbering about a dozen fire personnel, arrived within minutes and located the hiker in rugged terrain from which rescuers could not safely extricate the victim.
A sheriff’s helicopter crew was summoned for assistance, and a deputy was lowered to the spot with a litter and line. The hiker was hoisted to safety, then taken by ambulance to a trauma center for treatment of major injuries, according to the fire department.
The circumstances behind the hiking mishap were not immediately known.
