One killed, five injured in Perris wreck

PERRIS – Authorities today were still attempting to sort out details of a head-on wreck in Perris that killed a motorist and injured five people, including three juveniles.

The crash happened around 3:30 p.m. Sunday on Cajalco Road, just east of Gavilan Road, according to the Riverside County Coroner’s Office.

Juan Velazquez, 69, of San Jacinto was headed west when, “for unknown reasons,” he allowed his 2007 Toyota Yaris to drift into opposing traffic lanes and collide with a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, said CHP Officer Steve Carapia.

He said Velazquez was pronounced dead at the scene.

The pickup’s driver, 39-year-old Refugio Garcia of San Jacinto, and two of his passengers, a 13-year-old girl and a 14-year-old girl, suffered major injuries, Carapia said.

Two other passengers, a 38-year-old woman and a 15-year-old boy, received minor injuries. All were transported to Riverside County Regional Medical Center in Moreno Valley, according to the CHP officer.

Anyone with information was asked to contact the Riverside CHP office at (951) 637-8000.
