Robbery suspect leads police on cross-county pursuit, arrested in Riverside

RIVERSIDE  – A robbery suspect who led police on a pursuit from Orange County to Riverside today was arrested following a freeway standoff, police said.
The pursuit began in the city of Orange just after midnight, with Orange police officers and the California Highway Patrol chasing a man armed with a shotgun. The man was wanted for robbery in Orange County, as well as a robbery
and kidnapping in San Diego County, according to a Riverside police release.
Police were able to disable the vehicle and the man stopped his car on the Magnolia Avenue offramp of the eastbound 91 Freeway. He opened his car door, dropped his shotgun on the ground, but refused to exit his car, police
said.
The man spoke with Corona police negotiators, telling them that he was “under the influence, distraught and planning to commit suicide by cop.” However, a Riverside police SWAT team was called in and was able to
arrest the man without incident. He was turned over to the Orange Police Department.
