As East County’s State Senator, it is an honor to represent our country’s second largest community of Chaldean Americans. I have been deeply troubled in recent weeks watching reports of the ruthless persecution to which families and friends of many of my constituents have been subjected in Iraq. The murdering of innocent people in cold blood for their religious beliefs can only be described as genocide.
I have called on the federal government to deploy the resources necessary to provide refuge for Iraqi citizens fleeing this brutal persecution by introducing Senate Joint Resolution 17.
SJR 17 would urge President Obama to expedite processing for Iraq’s minority groups and lift quotas on Iraqi Christian refugees to streamline the process of accepting them into the United States.
On Monday, SJR 17 has passed the Senate with a vote of 34-0 but the Assembly Rules Committee, where SJR 17 currently awaits action, has informed me that they will not act on the bill. If the bill is not voted on before Friday, August 29, it will die from lack of action.
Here in El Cajon, a peace walk was held on Tuesday, August 19 to draw attention to the violence being perpetrated against religious minority groups in Iraq. At the event over 200 members of the community signed up in support of SJR 17.
Despite the broad support for this resolution, SJR 17 is currently being held up in the Assembly Rules Committee. Today, I ask those who believe religious freedom should be guaranteed to everyone to email me with your support, so that I can show the committee that this resolution deserves to be voted on.
Please email your letters of support to firstname.lastname@example.org
We urge your support today so that SJR 17 may move forward and California can stand up for the religious minorities in Iraq.
P.S. Please forward this email to your friends and family that you believe would want to join this effort to stand up against genocide in Iraq.
