Suspicious Package Prompts Evacuation at Courthouse

A “suspicious package” that was later discovered to contain a few miscellaneous items and some clothing prompted sheriff’s officials to call the bomb squad out and evacuate the courthouse in French Valley on Thursday morning, June 12.

According to Lt. Lori Marquette of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, the package was sent to the public defender’s office at the Southwest Justice Center on Auld Road. Employees at the office were concerned about its possible contents and notified deputies.

The Hazardous Device Team was called out to inspect the package and with the approval of the presiding judge, officials decided to evacuate the building for the safety of the public and court employees at about 10:30 a.m.

The evacuation order was lifted by early afternoon and the courthouse resumed normal operations at 1:30 p.m., Marquette said.

Voir dire in Judge Rushton’s courtroom, 301, came to a grinding halt for a simple criminal case. Now it won’t be until Monday, the 16th, that a jury is finally empaneled. The wheels of justice turn exceedingly slowly.
