Valley athletes square off in All-Star football game

RIVERSIDE – High school football players whose athletic and academic achievements made them standouts on their respective teams will be vying for the top spot today in the Canyon Coast Classic Arizona-Southern California High School All-Star Game.

Thirty-two youths are slated to take the field for the fourth annual event, sponsored by the Riverside Convention & Visitors Bureau, Riverside Sports Commission and area businesses. Like 2013, this year’s gridiron action will be held at Riverside City College’s Wheelock Stadium.

“The return of this classic speaks volumes to the value of the unique Riverside experience,” said Riverside Sports Commission Director Debbi Guthrie. ”Last year’s event was a tremendous success, memorable and fun for all participants, families and our community.”

The Southern California Interscholastic Football Coaches Association and the Arizona Interscholastic Football Coaches Association organize the events, which are intended to recognize varsity players who have demonstrated dedication on and off the field.

According to organizers, high school seniors are selected based on their athletic ability, classroom accomplishments and community involvement.

The CIFCA also highlighted the value of coaches interacting and learning how to promote higher levels of academic and athletic success.

Around 4,000 are expected to turn out for the game, which will be livestreamed via .
