Weather Service faulty sensor reports 90 degrees

RIVERSIDE – The National Weather Service agrees that the official temperature reading in Riverside may have been 90 degrees today, but the amazing February high stemmed from a faulty sensor, an NWS spokesman said.

The remote thermometer at the Riverside Municipal Airport had a glitch that technicians were working to correct, NWS forecaster Michael Watkins in San Diego said.

The actual high in Riverside was 70 degrees with a projected low of 50.

The highest temperature in Riverside County at midday was Indio, which had a high of 82 degrees. Other Inland Empire areas like Cathedral City and Corona temperatures were in the low to mid-70s, which Watkins said was normal for this time of the year.

”I think most people would say it’s a pleasant day today,” Watkins said.

Riverside Fire Department Battalion Chief Mitch Wesche echoed that sentiment as there were no reports of any weather-related calls or injuries.

”It’s a beautiful day,” Wesche said. ”I don’t believe it’s 90 degrees out there.”
