A 37-year-old woman who was killed early Sunday just outside Hemet when her SUV went airborne, crashed into a parked bus and caught fire was identified as Kristine Salyer of Hemet, coroner’s officials said.
Salyer was driving northbound on Chicago Avenue in her 2001 Dodge Durango at speeds “well in excess” of the 45 mph speed limit and failed to slow down for a stop sign at the road’s intersection with Cedar Avenue, California Highway Patrol Officer Darren Meyer wrote in a news release.
The Durango hit a dirt mound on the north side of the road and became airborne, crashing head-on into the front of an old, non-functioning school bus parked on a private lot, according to the release. The Durango instantly caught fire.
Salyer died from injuries before emergency personnel arrived, the release says.
The California Highway Patrol has not ruled out alcohol or drugs as factors in the crash, according to Meyer.
