Woman killed in two-vehicle crash in Lake Elsinore on New Year’s Day; alcohol believed to be a factor

A 59-year-old woman was killed in a broadside collision in Lake Elsinore just after midnight on New Year’s Day and alcohol was believed to have been a factor in the incident.

The two-vehicle crash happened in the area of Riverside Drive and Joy Street, according to a Riverside County sheriff’s news release.

A Dodge Charger was traveling eastbound on Riverside Drive and collided with the side of the Jeep Grand Cherokee which was traveling northbound on Joy Street.

The 59-year-old woman, the front passenger of the Jeep, was ejected from the force of the collision and pronounced dead at the scene, sheriff’s officials say.

Officials say alcohol is a suspected factor on the part of the driver of the Charger, though no one was yet in custody as of Wednesday afternoon.

Riverside Drive was closed for about five hours following the incident.

Sheriff’s officials are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact Officer Willow of the Lake Elsinore Police Department at 951-245-3300.
