Car Crash Causes Brush Fire

RIVERSIDE – A car drove off the westbound Riverside (91) Freeway, slammed into a power pole and started a brush fire today.

The crash was reported at 1:30 p.m. west of the La Sierra Avenue off- ramp, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Following the crash, the car caught fire and ignited surrounding vegetation, officials said. The fire spread one-quarter to one-half mile along the freeway, Riverside Fire Department Battalion Chief Michael Staley told the Press Enterprise.

The fire threatened nearby apartments but ultimately only burned a garage, according to the CHP.

It was unclear if the fire resulted in any injuries.
