Corona athlete suspected of gunning down dad, visitor

CORONA  – A professional baseball player suspected of fatally shooting his father and another man and wounding a third inside a Corona home was arrested today following a short car and foot chase, authorities said.
Brandon Willie Martin, 22, was arrested at the end of a pursuit in the 800 block of Derby Street, according to Corona police.
Martin is suspected in the slayings of his father, 64-year-old Michael Martin, and 62-year-old Barry Swanson of Riverside, an ADT alarm company installer who just happened to be at the Winthrop Drive residence when the
assailant showed up at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sgt. Brent Nelson said.
Brandon Martin’s uncle, 51-year-old Ricky Lee Anderson of Corona, also was shot and is on life support, Nelson said.
A motive for the attack remains unclear, though authorities said the suspect recently was detained for a psychiatric evaluation and apparently went straight to the house after he was released from a Riverside County health
facility.
After the shootings, Martin allegedly stole Swanson’s pickup truck and hid out overnight.
According to Nelson, an off-duty Corona policeman spotted the truck in the area of Lincoln and Mountain avenues this morning and attempted to stop it, but Martin fled onto Derby Street, dodging several patrol vehicles whose
officers tried to forcibly disable the Ford F-150 using PIT maneuvers.
Martin bailed out of the truck near Foothill Elementary School and darted into a home, where a woman was taking a shower, police said.
Martin tried to escape by leaping from a second-story window but was apprehended by a K9 officer and his dog, according to Nelson.
The woman was not injured.
According to published reports, the suspect graduated from Santiago High School in 2011 and was a Major League Baseball draftee that year, picked to play shortstop for the Tampa Bay Rays’ minor league system.
His career spanned two seasons before he dropped out for undisclosed reasons.
