DESERT HOT SPRINGS – A search of a man’s car in Desert Hot Springs turned up stolen guns and suspected heroin, landing him in police custody.
Edwin Ortiz-Martinez, 27, of Desert Hot Springs, was arrested Sunday for allegedly being in possession of stolen guns, including a loaded sawed-off shotgun and a loaded handgun, along with ammunition, body armor and heroin.
Desert Hot Springs police were conducting a patrol just after 9 a.m. Sunday when they saw Ortiz-Martinez ducking into his car in the 66100 block of Second Street, Detective Christopher Saucier said. A subsequent search turned up a loaded pistol magazine on Ortiz-Martinez, followed by the vehicle search that revealed loaded stolen handgun matching the magazine, a loaded sawed-off shotgun, body armor, ammunition and a substance believed to be heroin, Saucier said.
According to the detective, Ortiz-Martinez appeared to have dropped the handgun when he ducked inside the car.
Saucier said a records check showed that the susp[ect was the subject of an outstanding arrest warrant, though details on that case were not immediately available.
Ortiz-Martinez was booked into the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning.
