PERRIS: Blaze blackens field near Perris Valley Airport

PERRIS – A fire that broke out yesterday in a field northwest of Perris Valley Airport scorched more than an acre and burned into a recycling yard before crews got it partially contained.

The non-injury blaze was reported about 11:20 a.m. in the 300 block of Ellis Avenue, near Goetz Road, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

An agency spokeswoman said about three dozen personnel were sent to the location and began encircling the fire as it extended into the storage area of a recycling business.

By 12:15 p.m., the forward rate of spread had been stopped, according to the fire department, but the extent of damage to the recycling yard was not immediately known.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
