PERRIS – A 23-year-old drunken driving suspect who was injured in a head-on collision near Perris that killed his passenger will be facing felony charges after he’s released from the hospital, authorities said Monday.
The crash occurred about 12:20 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of Cajalco and Wood roads in Mead Valley, just west of Perris, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officer Dan Olivas said Bahena suffered major injuries in the wreck and is undergoing treatment at Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley. His passenger, a woman whose name has not been released, died at the same facility about 45 minutes after the crash.
According to Olivas, Bahena was driving westbound on Cajalco in his 1997 Subaru
when the sedan drifted into oncoming traffic and struck the vehicle of 30-year-old Jacobo Salazar.
Salazar suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene by Riverside County Fire Department paramedics.
Olivas said Bahena will be formally arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence resulting in death when he’s medically cleared to leave the hospital.
