Public wifi hotspot to be unveiled at Indio Farmworkers Housing Complex

INDIO – A free public wifi hotspot will be unveiled today for local farmworkers and their families living at an Indio housing complex, providing the residents with internet connectivity, as well as a renovated computer lab.

The wifi hotspot, one of six installed throughout the Coachella Valley by Frontier Communications, will be unveiled Tuesday morning for the residents of the Villa Hermosa apartments, a low-cost housing complex developed by the Coachella Valley Housing Coalition.

Assemblyman Eduardo Garcia, D-Coachella, and representatives from Frontier were expected to attend the ribbon cutting.

Officials say that the efforts, along with legislative efforts like AB 1665, the Internet for All Now Act of 2017, will help “bridge the digital divide” that cuts much-needed internet access from certain portions of the population, particularly in rural, low-income communities.
