An error in mailing ballots has led Rancho Mirage’s Registrar of Voters to hand deliver ballots for area residents.
A mailing vendor for the county failed to send out 36 ballots for today’s Rancho Mirage election, and now the Registrar of Voters staff will hand-deliver those ballots to residents this morning, it was reported.
“It is important that we take extraordinary measures to correct this mistake and ensure every voter has the opportunity to cast a ballot,” said Registrar of Voters Rebecca Spencer. The election is being conducted completely by mail, so there are no established polling places.
The registrar’s staff will hand-deliver the ballots to homes as well as try to contact the 36 residents by phone and email.
Spencer stated the issue stemmed from residents who registered near the close of registration, and that was the reason they were among the last in the registrar’s mailings for the election.
The vendor missed them, as it prepared for the June election. The vendor notified the Registrar’s Office at 8:40 a.m. today–Tuesday, April 12, 2016–that it had forgotten to mail the ballots, and the vendor has confirmed that no other ballots were overlooked.
Spencer pointed out that provisional ballots are available today at the Rancho Mirage City Clerk’s office for any voter who did not receive or who lost a vote-by-mail ballot. The City Clerk is issuing provisional ballots between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. today, April 12, 2016.
