We usually don’t think of going to a Mexican restaurant for breakfast, but this is truly scrumptious!” I comment, almost finished with my Home Breakfast Potatoes and Huevos A La Mexicana at the Los Cabos Mexican Grill.
Cubed potatoes, tossed with onions and large chunks of tomatoes, cooked to perfection in spices, are served with the best scrambled eggs I have tasted to date – with diced onions, tender green peppers and a few jalapenos for the added zest. The spicy tomato chunks were so juicy that today was one of those rare occasions when I didn’t drench my breakfast in ketchup. I spooned some of this delightful fare inside a hot tortilla and the flavors came together to make for a really memorable experience.
Felix and Miriam Aguilar opened Los Cabos Mexican Grill in Murrieta in 2007. Named after a municipality at the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula, a fast growing resort area famous for its fishing industry, Los Cabos Mexican Grill is a family-run restaurant.
The family-oriented ambience pervades the dining hall – one can’t help but feel instantly cheered up upon entrance – cerulean blue ceiling contrasts excellently with jovial walls in Mediterranean yellow. El Arco, the Golden Arch, Los Cabos’s prominent landmark, is featured on the paintings that adorn the walls. Stained glass murals with serene aquamarine scenes, very typical of a diving adventure in Los Cabos, trim the booths. Felix and Miriam had a hand in the dining hall’s design, and the atmosphere they managed to create is very relaxing and vacation-like. Latin music further adds an authentic flavor to your meal.
The menu offers traditional items such as tacos, burritos and quesadillas, but it also serves a wide variety of salads, enchiladas as well as seafood dishes such as Camarones Rancheros, shrimp cooked in special Ranchera Sauce and served with rice, beans and guacamole; and Fish al Ajillo, tilapia fillet grilled with a special garlic sauce and served with rice and fried potatoes.
My husband, feeling hungry for his traditional favorite, a tostada, ordered a vegetarian option – instead of chicken ask for an extra serving of home-made refried pinto beans. It arrived in a large crisp flour tortilla layered with beans, crisp lettuce, sautéed spinach, yellow squash, zucchini, onions – all topped with guacamole.
Los Cabos prides itself on their home-style cooking, so rare these days in the era of fast-food Mexican food joints.
“People are too busy to sit down and enjoy a good, long home-cooked meal,” notes Felix. “But that is so important. Besides, our burritos are so much healthier for you – we don’t squirt sour cream all over them.”
All food is prepared from scratch in-house, says Felix.
“This is what sets us apart from traditional fast-food eateries.”
Beans, salsas and even enchilada sauce are all made with secret ingredients and have their own distinct flavor. Chips and home-made deliciously piquant salsa are served with every meal.
Los Cabos is starting a great dinner special – $9.95 for a chicken and tilapia combo. You might also be interested in Dinner Offer for Two – $18.95 for chicken and beef fajitas. Felix has plans to introduce an International Menu at Los Cabos Mexican Grill and then the customers would be able to try not only Mexican, but Peruvian and Cuban cuisines as well with dishes such as chicken and shrimp jambalaya added to the menu.
“We opened at the start of the recession, but survived all the hardships that came with it,” says Felix.
