After year-long investigation, suspect charged with murder of Lake Elsinore man

LAKE ELSINORE – On February 15, 2013, at about 5:35 p.m., officers from the Lake Elsinore Police Department responded to the 1000 block of Dolly Drive regarding a dead body.

Upon arrival, officers located a male subject at the location suffering from traumatic injuries. The male victim was identified as George Alongi, age 76 of Lake Elsinore.

Detectives from the Central Homicide Unit and the Lake Elsinore Police Department responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. During the course of the investigation detectives developed information linking Alongi’s step-son, Simon Cortez, age 40 of Lake Elsinore, to the killing.

On March 18, detectives with the Central Homicide Unit presented the case to the District Attorney’s Office. The District Attorney’s Office then filed charges for murder, personal use of a knife and a special circumstance allegation of lying in wait against Cortez.
