RIVERSIDE – A man riding inside a car, driven by an alleged drunken driver in a street race at over 120 miles per hour, was killed in a crash today in Riverside, police said.
Ruben Terriquez was killed in the crash of the 1994 Ford Mustang driven by the allegedly drunken racer: Jesus Gamez. Both men were identified as 18- year-old Riverside residents.
Gamez was allegedly racing some sort of silver sedan southbound on Mitchell Avenue shortly after 1 a.m. The driver apparently ran a stop sign at Norwood Avenue, and the speeding Mustang shoved a parked 2005 Honda Accord into a utility pole, said Riverside police Sgt. Dan Reeves.
”Both occupants had to be extricated from the vehicle by Riverside Fire Department personnel,” Reeves said. ”They were transported to Riverside Community Hospital for treatment and the passenger succumbed to his injuries during treatment.”
Gamez suffered non-life threatening injuries, while the silver sedan left the scene after the crash, Reeves said.
Riverside police were investigating and asked anyone with information to call (951) 826-8723.
