For those of you craving more football, the Riverside Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Riverside Sports Commission, in sponsorship with Under Armour, Chick-Fil-A and Courtyard Marriott (Riverside Downtown/UCR), are hosting the fourth annual Canyon Coast All-Star Football Game between Arizona and Southern California. The interstate senior showcase will be held on January 20, 2014 at the Wheelock Stadium at Riverside City College.
Arizona holds a 2-1 series advantage; they won 26-6 last year.
The top 32 high school football players from Arizona and Southern California are selected to play based on athletic accomplishments, academic success, team dedication, community involvement and availability (graduating seniors can only play in two all-star games). “This All-Star game honors the best all-around athletes in Arizona and Southern California,” said Lee Brush, Executive Director of Arizona Football Coaches Association. For many players, the all-star game is a last chance to show their skills and abilities.
Four Valley players were selected: offensive lineman Niko Gomez (Heritage), defensive lineman Jordan Silva (Murrieta Valley), linebacker/tight end RJ Benz (Paloma Valley), and kicker/punter John Baron (Chaparral). Baron kicked a 36-yard game-winning field goal in overtime to give Riverside County the win over San Bernardino County in last week’s Inland Empire Classic All-Star game.
Game time is 12:30 pm on Monday (Martin Luther King Day); tickets are $10. Come out and see SoCal’s best take on Arizona’s best.
