Last weekend was another great weekend of soccer for the Arsenal FC girls U11 team. The Carlsbad Cup 2014 was their toughest tournament this summer after coming off a championship run at the Encintas Rotary Cup a few weeks ago, and the girls were looking to carry that momentum into this tournament.
Game one on Saturday kicked off at 8:30 a.m. against the Pateadores out of Mission Viejo. Arsenal FC quickly dominated possession during the first half and found the net with a finish from Kate Jacobsen assisted by Alyssa Aldaco in the 22nd minute of play. To keep the competition heated, Arsenal’s keeper, Heidi Marshall, also made a huge save to carry their 1-0 lead into half.
The Pateadores came out more aggressive in the 2nd half and dominated play for the first 8 minutes until Arsenal FC recovered and the momentum shifted as they kept the ball in their opponents half, locking in a 1-0 victory.
Game two kicked off later that day at 3:30 p.m. against the Oceanside Breakers. Arsenal FC came firing out of the gates with a goal by Jordan Florence from the right side within the first 30 seconds of play. Most of the parents actually missed the goal since it happened so quickly. A few minutes later an Arsenal breakaway by Kate Jacbosen got the excitement going again as a shot on goal was deflected by the Oceanside keeper and Jordan Florence and Talia Stacy were both there for the tap in giving Arsenal FC a 2-0 lead within the first 5 minutes.
Oceanside answered with a breakaway goal and they converted on a corner to tie it up going into the second half. After the break, Rylee Smith received the ball in the middle and had a great leading pass to Kate Jacobsen up the left side where she fought off two defenders and found the corner of the net giving Arsenal FC the winning goal.
The finals game kicked off at 12 pm on Sunday against Carlsbad United Gold. The girls knew they had their work cut out for them since Carlsbad entered this game without being scored on and had logged an impressive 11 goals.
Arsenal FC and Carlsbad United battled back and forth with pretty much equal possession during the first half. The first goal came from a beautiful corner kick by Talia Stacy and Kalia Thunstrom was able to muscle over a defender with an awesome header. The girls and parents were ecstatic as this was the first goal scored on Carlsbad this weekend.
Unfortunately for Arsenal FC, Carlsbad converted on a free kick during the sixth minute of the second half tying the match at 1-1. The dagger came with just 30 seconds left of regulation play. Carlsbad was pressing and had a great switch to the right side giving their player the opportunity to drill the game winning goal. Carlsbad won 2-1.
Arsenal FC gave it their all and played with tremendous heart! “Every girl on the team left it all on the pitch and didn’t have anything left to give,” exclaimed Coach Kevin Legg, who gave major kudos to Arsenal’s defense which consisted of Dani Willams, Ryley Burns, AdriannaCortez, Lexi Hamilton, Kendra Cervantes and Jordyn Edison and their keeper Heidi Marshall for stepping up and only allowing Carlsbad two goals.
The Arsenal FC Girls U11 team is prepping for their next tournament (West Coast) which will likely be their biggest challenge this summer. Ryan Smith from Arsenal FC contributed to this article.
