Zach Eflin threw six scoreless innings and Hunter Renfroe went two for four with four RBIs in a 5-0 Storm victory Monday night against the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, shutting out an opponent for the first time this season.
For the second consecutive game the Storm scored in the first. Alberth Martinez led off the inning with his fourth double of the season while Reynaldo Bruguera notched his first Storm knock in the following at-bat. That set the table for Renfroe, who sent a low line drive over the shortstop’s glove that rolled all the way to the wall to score Martinez and Bruguera.
On the mound Eflin looked dominant from the start. The newly-minted 20 year old scattered two hits and a walk over his first four innings of work and struck out six in that span.
After putting up a pair in the first, the Storm were shutout until the fifth. Martinez collected his second hit of the night, and Renfroe followed with his third long ball of the season. The inning continued whenGabriel Quintana walked and scored on a Duanel Jones double to put the Storm up 5-0.
Eflin finished the night after six innings, allowing no runs on three hits and two walks while striking out seven. Cody Hebner, Brandon Alger and Ben Paullus combined to finish the shutout and secure the 5-0 win for the Storm.
With the victory the Storm (5-7) have won consecutive games for the second time this season. They’ll go for three in a row tomorrow against the Quakes (5-7) at LoanMart Field in Rancho Cucamonga. Colin Rea (0-0) will start for the Storm and face Lindsey Caughel (0-0). First pitch is slated for 7:05pm.
