Freshman shortstop Alexis “Mo” Mercado, a 2013 Great Oak High School graduate, hit her first home run of her collegiate career — a grand slam in the first inning against the #4-ranked University of Alabama. Mercado is credited with five RBI’s in the 8-0 five-inning “mercy rule” game. Arizona is the first team to do this against Alabama since 2011.
Mercado had another highlight in the Hillebrand Invitational, scoring on a double-steal against Grand Canyon University.
Arizona — an eight-time National Champion — swept the invitational and improved to 9-0 on the season.
Mercado led the Great Oak Wolfpack to its first-ever league championship in 2013, earning all-state, all conference and all-CIF honors. She batted .500 with a .721 slugging percentage. She was also a key part of the SoCal Athletics club team, contributing to five national championships.
So far this season, Mercado is batting .333 with three doubles and ten RBI’s. Her sister, Danica, plays for the University of Oregon.
