Burke Mitchell was flawless on the mound as he worked a no hit shutout into the final inning of Temecula Valley’s CIF round two playoff game against South Hills Tuesday. Huskies Pinch hitter Erik Martinez singled with two outs in the seventh and later scored South Hill’s only run on Johnny Dearth’s hit to break up Mitchell’s gem.
Temecula Valley played with a lot of enthusiasm and intensity against the Huskies and came up with several incredible defensive plays throughout the game. Centerfielder Drew Seelman made one behind the back grab running at full speed in the late innings that prevented a Huskies rally.
The Golden Bears scored in the first inning when Drew Seelman singled and advanced to third base as the South Hills starter hit both Kyle Plantier and AJ Sawyer to load the bases. Third baseman Mitch Kemp came up and promptly sacrificed Seelman home with a fly deep to right.
Temecula Valley scored three runs in the third to put the game away. Seelman began the rally as he drew a walk to start the inning. Plantier promptly doubled, sending Seelman to third. Sawyer followed with a single scoring Seelman for the first run of the inning.
Kemp then hit a shot down the first baseline which was bobbled and allowed Plantier to score from third. Samari Buchanan then perfectly executed a sacrifice bunt to move Sawyer to third. That brought up catcher Nick Julh who drove Sawyer home with a sacrifice fly for the third run of the inning.
“We got great pitching from Burke who took a no hitter into the last inning of the game” said Golden Bears Coach Tony Nobiensky. “When you get great pitching in a playoff game your going to give yourself a chance to win. I was happy with the intensity and the way we played today”. Coach Nobiensky later named Burke Mitchell as the player of the game.
The Golden Bears advance to the quarterfinals of the Ford CIF SS Division 2 Championship Playoffs against Dana Hills Friday. The Dolphins are 26-7 and are the 2014 Sea View League Champions. Sana Hills defeated Buena 3-0 in yesterday’s round two playoff game.
The quarterfinal game will be played at Temecula Valley at 3:15.
