Temecula Valley’s big bats rose to the occasion Tuesday afternoon as the Golden Bears rolled all over Valencia and earned a spot in the CIF SS Division 2 Championship game at Dodger Stadium Friday afternoon. Senior Burke Mitchell was sensational on the mound as he allowed just one run and limited the Tigers to just three hits while striking out five.
The only run that Mitchell would give up came in the first inning. It was all Mitchell after that as he shut down the big Tiger offense with the help of defensive gems by outfielder Jordan Gardner, third baseman Mitch Kemp and shortstop David Maldonado. Coach Tony Nobiensky named Mitchell the player of the game.
Trailing 1-0, the Golden Bears got things started in the third inning when AJ Sawyer drove in Temecula Valley’s fist two runs with a two out single. Temecula added two more runs in the fifth inning when Drew Seelman homered to center with Maldonado on base to give the Golden Bears a 4-1 lead.
The Golden Bears rallied for six huge runs in the sixth to deflate any Tiger hopes and put the game away for good. Maldonado singled, walked twice and scored three times against the Tigers. Seelman was perfect at the plate going 3-for-3 with a home run, double and scored twice. Kemp drove in two with a double and pair of singles.
The Golden Bears will be making their second successive trip to dodger Stadium to play in the CIF SS Division 2 Championship game. They were defeated 5-0 by Cypress last year. This year they will be facing the Wolverines from Aliso Niguel. The Wolverines are 23-9 and beat La Mirada 8-0 yesterday.
Game time at Dodger Stadium is 5pm Firday.
