Temecula Valley’s Brandon Koch threw a four hit shutout on the final day of the regular season to clinch a spot in the CIF SS Division 2 playoffs for the Golden Bears. Koch was in command all game on the mound and the Nighthawks just couldn’t get started against the Golden Bear senior.
The Bears and Nighthawks were tied for third place with identical 8-6 records as the game began.
The Golden Bears got their two runs in the bottom of the first inning when Samari Buchanan singled and drove Kyle Plantier and AJ Sawyer home. All three players had two hits apiece against the Nighthawks. It would be the only runs that Koch would need Thursday afternoon.
The victory improves Temecula Valley 18-8 overall and to 9-6 and third place in the tough Southwestern League. The victory also gives the Golden Bears an automatic berth in the CIF SS Division 2 Playoffs that begin next week. The top three teams in the league automatically qualify for the playoffs.
The Nighthawks fall to 8-7 and into fourth place with the loss. Murrieta Valley may qualify for an “At Large” invitation to the CIF tournament.
Great Oak cruised to a 10-0 win over Vista Murrieta to capture the Southwestern League Championship. Vista Murrieta placed second and both teams will be headed to the CIF-SS Division 2 Playoffs.
