Temecula Valley and Vista Murrieta have advanced to the Boras Classic Southern California final game to be held today at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana. The game is scheduled for a 6pm start.
The Golden Bears defeated last year’s champions mater Dei 4-1 as sophomore Devin Castro pitched four innings to pick up his second win of the season. The Golden Bears never trailed in the contest picking up a run in the second, another in the third and two insurance runs in the sixth. Senior Burke Mitchell threw three scoreless innings in relief to earn the save.
The Golden Bears offensive attach was led by AJ Sawyer and Alec Garrett who both went 2-for-3 with an RBI each. Summer Buchanan and Nick Juhl also had an RBI apiece against Mater Dei.
Vista Murrieta took advantage of two Glendora errors and eight walks to also win 4-1 on just four hits. Jack Moberg pitched 4 and two thirds innings to get the win for the Broncos. Brandon Nelson and JT McLellan each pitched a scoreless inning in relief and McLellan earned the save,
Moberg, Mclellan, Hunter Tidwell and Ruben Omelas each had an RBI against the Tartans. Alex Jaques singled and scored twice for the Broncos. Ryan Little and Coltin Gerhart also scored for Vista Murrrieta.
Temecula Valley is the Southwestern League leader with a 3-0 record. Vista Murrieta has yet to beat a league opponent but is undefeated outside of league play. The Broncos fell to the Golden Bears 6-1 at the league opener played at the Lake Elsinore Diamond on March 21st .
Sixteen of the best high school baseball teams in Southern California competed in the Boras Classic South Tournament. The North Division will begin play next week. The winners of both the South and North Division tournaments will meet in early May to decide the winner of the overall tournament
