HS Girls Basketball: Great Oak Slams Temecula Valley 70-49 – The Wolfpack Improves to 3-1 in League Play

The Wolfpack girls’ basketball team started slow but finished in a flurry as Great Oak defeated Temecual Valley in their first meeting of the Southwestern League season. The Golden Bears got off to a great start, taking a 12-6 lead in the first period and upset was on everyone’s minds.

It would not be so. The Wolfpack exploded for 25 points in the second period and shut down the Bears offense and finished out the half with a 31-26 lead. It was all Great Oak in the second half as the Wolfpack outscored the Golden Bears 39-23 to put the game away and improve their record to 3-1 in league, one game behind Vista Murrieta.

“The Golden Bears were aggressive in the beginning of the game,” said Great Oak Coach Shannon Maurice. “We were pressing, trying to do too much early in the game. We needed to lay back and let the game come to us. We were trying to do too much. Overall, a good performance against a good team.”

Junior Mikayla Williams led the Wolfpack attack with 22 points. Abby Welch scored 15 points for Great Oak and Deja Burnside 11. Elizabeth Tuccinardi added eight for the Pack.

Temecula Valley was led by Tehya Burroughs who scored 20 points for the Golden Bears. Junior guard Natalie Macias scored 14 points and Danielle Weinmann seven.

The game was dedicated to the Coaches Versus Cancer program. It is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. All teams in the Southwestern League participated in this year’s program. A portion of all proceeds are donated to the American Cancer Society.

The Wolfpack will be back at home in the friendly confines of the Wolf’s Den to face the Rams Tuesday night. Murrieta Mesa is even at 2-2 in league play and hungry for more. The Golden Bears will lick their wounds and re-group and get ready to host Murrieta Valley next. The Nighthawks are still trying to find their rhythm and are 1-3 in league play.
