HS Girls Basketball: Murrieta Mesa Beats the Nighthawks 31-20, Pumas Knock Off Temecula Valley 54-34 – The Heat Is On as Teams Head Into Week Two of League Play

Murrieta Mesa rolled to a 31-20 win over the Nighthawks Thursday night and improved their record to 1-1 in league play. Murrieta Valley falls to 0-2 and the defending CIF SS 2A Champions still haven’t come together as a team this season.

The Nighthawks never got things started against Murrieta Mesa. The Rams shut out Murrieta Valley 10-0 in the first period. That was all the Rams would need. The Nighthawks battled back in the last three periods but the damage had been done.

Mikayla Greens led the attack for Murrieta Mesa. Greens scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Jessica Brogdon led the Rams with 14 rebounds while scoring seven points. Kiersta Tanner and Jasmine Glenn both scored four points for the Rams.

Alex Morrison was the Nighthawks leading scorer with six points. Nellie Jones, Ariana Hernandez and Simone Jimerson each scored four for Murrieta Valley.

The Nighthawks were hammered by the Great Oak Wolfpack 67-26 in the league opener.

Temecula Valley fell to Chaparral 54-34. After falling behind 11-2 in the first period, the Golden Bears fought back and outscored Chaparral 17-12 in the second period to pull the game to within three points 22-19 at the end of the first half. The Pumas adjusted in the third period and it was all Chaparral after the half. Final score Pumas 54 Golden Bears 34.

Junior center Kali Jones was dominant as she put on a scoring exhibition and put 29 points through the hoop. Junior guard Sara Hogman added 12 points for the Pumas.

Temecula Valley’s Reana Miyahira led the Golden bears with 12 points. Christina Turner and Daniele Weinman scored six points apiece. Tehya Burroughs had nine steals and four points for Temecula Valley.

The Rams will host the Golden Bears Tuesday. Temecula Valley is 0-2 in league play. Powerhouse Vista Murrieta will come to MV to play the Nighthawks. The 2-0 Pumas will face Great Oak. Game times are all at 5:15pm.
