MURRIETA – The Murrieta Valley Nighthawks girls’ basketball team is 7-3 and has won five of its last six games.
Coming off of a 65-47 win at Fallbrook, the Lady Nighthawks hosted Oceanside and sent the Lady Pirates home with a 45-37 loss. Senior forward Karen Wolf had 10 points and eight rebounds. Aliah Marshall contributed nine points while sophomore guard Ariana Hernandez had eight. Senior DeShea Wilkes had 11 rebounds and 6’1” senior post player Brynn Dahmer had three blocks and three steals.
The Nighthawks went 3-1 at the Valley Invitational Tournament. They easily beat Notre Dame 54-19. Wolf had 15 points and six rebounds; Hernandez had 11 points; Wilkes had nine rebounds.
The Nighthawks won the battle against Redlands East Valley 62-58, with pressure defense and 45 percent shooting from the floor, including 3-of-4 three-point goals. Wolf had 16 points and six rebounds; Hernandez had a double-double with 14 points – including two three’s on two attempts – and 11 assists. Marshall had 13 points and seven rebounds; Dahmer pulled down eight boards and blocked seven shots.
In the next game against Redlands, the Nighthawks struggled with their outside shot (2-of-12 from the arc), but managed to finish ahead 51-45. Hernandez led the scoring with 11. Wolf had a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds; Dahmer also had 10 points, six rebounds. Redlands’ Dominique Underwood (22 pts) and Claire Gerard (17 pts, 11 rebounds) carried the load for the Terriers.
In Thursday’s, Dec. 13, final, 31 turnovers proved to be their undoing as the Nighthawks lost to Miller (8-1) 60-41. Wolf ended up with 12 points and six boards; Hernandez had 13 points. Sophomore Alex Morrison had nine rebounds.
So far this season (in 10 games), Wolf leads the area with 108 rebounds, Dahmer has 33 blocked shots, Hernandez has 44 assists and is second in three point shots made (15).
Murrieta Valley will host the Nighthawk Classic Dec. 26-29.
