Senior cornerback Billy Montoya (5’9”, 159 lbs) of the Murrieta Mesa Rams was offered over $28,000.00 in scholarship, aid and grants to attend Greenville College in Greenville, Illinois this fall and compete as a member of the Panthers football team.
Montoya currently has a 3.8 GPA. Montoya is the only Rams player in program history to have earned 1st Team All-Southwestern League at a defensive position, an honor he has earned twice as a defensive back (junior and senior years). He was selected Team Captain as a senior in 2013
Montoya is a two-time winner of the “Top Gun” award, given annually to the Rams player who creates the most turnovers (i.e., interceptions, blocked kicks/punts, caused fumbles, recovered fumbles, etc). He recorded 8 in 2012 as a junior and 13 in 2013 as a senior. “As a result,” said Head Coach Justin Schaeffer, “ the perpetual award has been renamed the “Billy Montoya Top Gun Award” for his efforts and excellence.”
Montoya was the Rams Defensive Player of the Year as a junior in 2012 and again as a senior in 2013. He was also the Rams Special Teams Player of the Year this past season.
Montoya is the third Rams player this season to sign a National Letter of Intent to attend 4-year university and play football (Ruben Meza and Jacob Wallace signed earlier this year). Montoya is the eighth player from the Murrieta Mesa Rams Football program in the last two years to sign a National Letter of Intent and receive either a full or partial scholarship to play four-year college football. (Andrew McLain/Azusa Pacific University, Khalil Sharpe/Southwest Baptist University, Jess Ayala / U.C. Davis, Garrett Andrews / Oregon Pacific, Clayton Willis / Humboldt State University, Ruben Meza / Sacramento State University, Jacob Wallace / Central Methodist).
A ninth student=athlete, Craig Mauldin, received a track & Field scholarship to Central Michigan University.
