Murrieta residents Dave Ramirez and Ronda Smyth each won two divisions at the Fallbrook Open tennis tournament June 5-13 at the Fallbrook Tennis Club.
Ramirez teamed with Bonsall’s Hailey Johnson to win the mixed open doubles division and with Fallbrook’s Daniel Andrus to win the men’s open doubles championship. Smith and Temecula’s Tricia Bouma teamed with each other to win the round-robin women’s 4.5 doubles championship while Ronda and Kevin Smyth defeated Tricia and Mike Bouma in 6-3 and 6-2 sets to win the mother-sondoubles championship match.
Ramirez and Johnson won the mixed open doubles championship with a win in the finals over Julie Anna Chidley of Riverside and Gregory Gerken of San Diego. Ramirez and Andrus faced Valley Center’s Timothy Clark and San Diego’s Elias Scandalis in the Men’s Open Doubles finals and won a pair of 6-2 sets.
Temecula’s William Pomerenke and Fallbrook’s Fran White required three sets to win the mixed 4.5 doubles finals against John Gorman of Sun City and Anolay Roberts of Perris. The first set was tied at six games apiece before Gorman and Roberts won the tiebreaking game.
Pomerenke and White evened the match and won the championship with a triumph in the third set.
Canyon Lake’s Dick Paul and Oceanside’s Ken Froblom teamed to win the mens 4.0 doubles division, but not before a three-set win in the finals over Michael and James Daugherty of Escondido.
Paul and Froblom won in the first set, the Daughertys evened the match with a win in the second set, and Paul and Froblom’s triumph in the third set decided the match and the division championship.
Aaron Coyle of Menifee was the mens 5.5 singles champion. He faced Scott Harper of Fallbrook in the finals and won the match.
Temecula’s Robert and Jordan Bryant reached the finals of the father-son doubles division before a loss to Andrus and his father, Dan, who also lives in Fallbrook.
Temecula’s Vicki Anderson and Fallbrook’s Cherie Van Wechel played in the women’s 4.0 doubles championship match but lost to the Fallbrook duo of Brenda Fields and Michelle Hatch.
