Renfroe Clutch in Storm Win – That dog will hunt…

An RBI double from Hunter Renfroe broke a 2-2 tie in the eighth to push the Storm past the Modesto Nuts Friday night, catalyzing a 4-2 victory.

Duanel Jones got the scoring started in the second. The Storm first baseman drove a two-out home run to left, his first of the season.

The long ball would benefit the Storm again in the fourth. Gabriel Quintana matched Jones’ effort with a deep bomb of his own to give the Storm a 2-0 lead.

Joe Ross was once again impressive on the mound. The Oakland native went 5.1 innings and allowed just one earned run on four hits and two walks while striking out six.

Ross looked as if he would make it through the end of the sixth, but manager Jamie Quirk went to the bullpen after the righty allowed back-to-back runners to reach base. Ben Paullus was called on in relief, and after a run scored on a single another Nut would cross the plate on a wild pitch to tie the game 2-2.

Paullus settled down in the subsequent innings, and kept the Nuts off the board in a combined effort with left hander Chris Nunn, who pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth.

Renfroe’s clutch hitting in the ninth was set up by an Alberth Martinez walk and a sacrifice bunt attempt turned error that put two men on with no out. The Mississippi State alum drove his first hit of the night down the left field line to plate Martinez, and Renfroe later scored on a Quintana sacrifice fly to pad the lead. Trevor Gott worked a one-two-three ninth for his fourth save of the season, and the Storm finalized their eighth win of the season 4-2.

Zach Eflin gets the call for the Storm (8-8) tomorrow in the rubber game, while Rockies pitcher Jhoulys Chacin will make a rehab start for the Nuts (4-12). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05pm.
