The Lake Elsinore Storm returned to the win column Sunday evening, defeating the High Desert Mavericks 4-2 in the third game of a four-game series.
High Desert took an early lead courtesy of a Jabari Henry home run in the top of the first, but the Storm answered in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. Gabriel Quintana reached with two outs after a passed ball strike out, and Dane Phillips continued the inning with a walk. Diego Goris then singled in Quintana to make it 1-1.
The Mavericks got to Storm starter Coby Cowgill (W, 3-1) for another run in the third, but the right hander dialed in as the game went on. Cowgill worked six innings, giving up six hits en route to his third win in five Storm starts.
Down 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Lake Elsinore took the lead for good with a three-run inning. After Alberth Martinez started the frame with a walk, Mallex Smith later singled to put runners on the corners with two outs. A botched rundown during the next at-bat allowed Martinez to score the tying run, and Benji Gonzalez followed with a single to put the Storm up 3-2. After Quintana was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat, Phillips plated Gonzalez from second with his second hit of the game to give the Eyes a 4-2 lead.
Relievers Roman Madrid, Genison Reyes and Brandon Alger (S, 8) held the Mavericks scoreless over the final three innings to secure the win.
Goris extended his hitting streak to a team-high six games, and the Storm shortstop has now hit safely in 19 of the last 20 games. Phillips has recorded a hit in 13 of the last 14 contests, and Gonzalez has done so in nine of the last ten.
Lake Elsinore (55-39) has won seven of their last eight games at The Diamond and goes for the series victory tonight. All-Star Joe Ross (8-5, 3.82 ERA) gets the ball for the Storm while David Holman (2-1, 4.40 ERA) will go for High Desert (45-49). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05pm.
