Storm shutout at home, bats go quiet in 7-0 loss

The Lake Elsinore Storm were shutout for just the second time this season Tuesday night, dropping the first of a three-game set with the Lancaster Jethawks 7-0.

Lancaster jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first, tagging Storm starter Joe Ross (L, 5-3) for a run in the opening frame. Ruben Sosa tripled with one out and scored on Carlos Correa’s groundout.

Despite the early deficit, Ross pitched well in the subsequent innings. The Oakland, CA product kept the ‘Hawks off the board from the second through the sixth, including a stretch of ten consecutive outs, allowing just two hits in that span.

Lake Elsinore struggled against Lancaster right hander Kyle Westwood (W, 3-3), who kept the Storm from getting all but three men into scoring position.

After a closely contested six innings, the game was broken open in the top of the seventh. Lancaster struck for four runs on three hits and two Storm errors, increasing their lead to five. The JetHawks would add two more in the ninth to win 7-0.

Jeremy Baltz extended his hitting streak to six while Benji Gonzalez improved his consecutive hit mark to five.

The loss cut Lake Elsinore’s (32-21) California League South Division lead to just one game with seventeen to play before the break. Lancaster (31-22) is now 7-2 at The Diamond this season.

Zach Eflin (5-2, 3.23 ERA) gets the start in game two tonight while Kent Emanuel (1-1, 6.27 ERA) will go for the JetHawks. First pitch is slated for 6:05pm.
